Why? Many people might think jailbreak as something bad and unethical, but forgetting the whole point of owning a product. Flash back 10-20 years ago, when you buy a gaming console or a cellphone. It gives you a gaming console and a cellphone that you can use out-of-the-box instead of a piece of hardware that cannot work unless you pay extra for the service. Same for my E-Reader, the official firmware is missing a lot of utilities, no English/Vietnamese dictionary, no translation, only save your progress if you buy book on their shop, lack of customizations.
What I achieved:
- Successfully installed KOReader
- Customized the KOReader reading interface
- Installed En/Vi dictionaries
- Changed sleeping screen
- Auto warmth and night mode
Calibre is another story, I initially wanted to use this as a book management tool for my KOReader. However, I faced several difficulties while working with syncing metadata and reading progress. I have tried both plugins: Kobo Utilities and KOReader Sync. And due to the constant changes in Kobo firmware, plugins are often broken down. I decided to stick with the traditional way, backing up the entire database manually.
Quick Update: The KOReader Sync plugin is actually working, just tested through wired connection. Have to create all the custom columns in order to make it work.
To backup KOReader, go under /Volumes/KOBOeReader/.adds/koreader:
settings.reader.luacontains all the settings of KOReadersetttings/directory contains some other specific settings such as gestures or networksdata/directory, for now I can only tell that it stores dictionaryclipboard/dictionary stores highlights and notes
INFO: Your individual book settings and highlights are kept in the same directory as your books in a folder with the same name as your book. You can backup these folders separately if you wish.
